Kaifeng
Kaifeng
Jews have always had a connection with the east and in China there is the city of Kaifeng which has entered the history books as a place where Jews travelled to, did business and made as their home.

For over a 1000 years, this community, while never huge in numbers became the stuff of legend and great interest.

So when a Chinese restaurant opens in Hendon, north west London, and names itself after the city of Kaifeng, you expect something special.

And for well over a decade, this upmarket restaurant has been delighting its customers with high quality food, impressive service and a great atmosphere.

A partnership between two businessmen, one Chinese and one Jewish, Kaifeng has established itself as the place to go to.

As well as eating a la carte and also set menu, it's Sunday's buffet that makes Kaifeng affordable as a regular treat for all.

For £18.95 plus service per person, you will be treated to a vast range of food to sample and eat as much as you like.

Starters will include sweet corn coup, toasted sesame chicken and ribs.

Being strictly kosher, means being creative with the ingredients to avoid anything that is not allowed according to Jewish and kosher dietary laws.

Main course will offer one or two chicken dishes, often sweet and sour or chicken with mushrooms, a beef dish and plenty of noodles and rice to go with the main dishes. On occasion, sweet and sour chicken will be replaced with sweet and sour lamb.

Dessert is then offered consisting of toffee apple or banana.

The quality of the cooking is exceptional, by far one of the best kosher restaurants in the UK and indeed in the world.

Sunday's buffet makes its food much more affordable and hence, gets booked up weeks in advance, so if you are thinking of going, set a Sunday date and book it.
