Sarah Silverman is both loved and loathed by Jews. On one level, she's got the balls to say what other Jews have always wanted to say but are too afraid and assimilated to say so, but on the other hand, what she has to say sometimes can be interpreted in the wrong way.
But Sarah is Jewtastic. Next month in the US, a feature film of her one women show, Jesus is Magic will be released. And hopefully, it will also come to the UK.
Performed in front of a live crowd in Los Angeles in September 2004, the show achieved great success for Silverman and the film itself got rave reviews at the Toronto Film Festival.
It's not the first time Silverman has been in front of the big screen. She has had supporting roles in some of comedy's finest moments in the last decade with appearances in There's Something About Mary and School of Rock.
So what makes her Jewtastic? Well, it's what she says.
Here are some of her finest moments of the New Hampshire born comedy Jewess.
"Hollywood is run by self-hating Jews who don’t want to see themselves reflected in the work they make. Some guy who works at NBC actually said to me, "There just aren’t any hot Jews. Winona Ryder’s the only one." I was like, "You’re a fucking scumbag." Yeah, Winona Ryder is hot, but of course her real name is Winona Horowitz. I asked all these suits I know, "If she went by Winona Horowitz would she have gotten all those lead in-genue roles?" One hundred percent of them said no." from Radar Magazine.
"People say I’m a nice girl saying terrible things. I tend to say the opposite of what I think. You hope that the absolute power of that transcends, and reaches the audience.” from The New Yorker.
"As a Jew—as a member of the Jewish community—I was really concerned that we were losing control of the media." from The New Yorker.
