Scientists from the Neve-Yaar Research Center in Israel have developed a new strain of tomato with rose and lemon fragrances.
The development was discovered during research to improve the taste of various fruit and vegetables. Scientists discovered genes with high potential to improve the taste and smell of tomatoes, fruit and other vegetables.
Producing the new tomato strain is however at the expense of the production of lycopene, which is what gives tomatoes their red color, and as the new strain contains only half the quantity of lycopene, they are a pale red color.
The tomatoes, which are the fruits of genetic engineering, were given to 82 participants to taste in an experiment. The vast majority (over 95%) mentioned the unique fragrance, saying that the tomatoes smelt like roses, geraniums and lemon grass. Over half (60%) preferred the taste of the new strain of tomato.
This discovery is a breakthrough, as it is the first time scientists have successfully used biotechnology to significantly improve the taste of tomatoes.
