Hip Hop Shabbat

Jewish hip hop is now finally moving away from being seen just a tacky gimmick.

Hip Hop Shabbat is a modern reworking of shabbat tunes by a collective of Jews under the name Original Jewish Gangsters (OJGs) and blends hip hop beats with elements of trip hop and some dub.

The OJGs are a group of five friends, four guys and one gal from Oakland in California and have been performing across much of California.

The album opens with shabbat candle lighting blessing and goes on with a great selection of other songs including: Oseh Shalom, T'fila and Shalom Aleichem.

As well as songs for shabbat, they've also thrown in a few tunes for Pesach - Dayenu and Let My People Flow.

For anyone who works to hear traditional Jewish songs given a bit of a facelift and made more relevant to those living in the 21st century, Hip Hop Shabbat is a great way for Jews to connect with their Judaism.
