A number of British Jews have been recognised for their achievements and contribution to society in this year's New Year Honours.

The former national chairman of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women has been made an MBE. Ronald Shelley, was recognised for his work for the group which supports Jewish soldiers as well as his contribution towards Jewish communal life.

Kay Hurwitz, wife of noted violinist Emanuel Hurwitz who died in November was awarded an MBE for services to music. Hurwitz, herself is a violin and viola teacher.

Tibor Gold, a specialist lawyer in patent and trade marks gets an MBE for services to Intellectual Property.

Professor Jonathan Drori, formerly director, Culture Online at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport gets a CBE. Prior to his Government role, Drori was a senior executive at the BBC.

Lawyer Geoffrey Bindman becomes a Sir for services to human rights.

Social activist Linda Bellos, co-chair of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Advisory Group was awarded an OBE for services to diversity.
