Plans for a dedicated Jewish Community Centre in London have moved forward with the purchase of a site in north west London as well as announcing a shortlist of architects who are bidding to become designers of the purpose built facility.

The 7,000 square metre location is a former Mercedes Benz dealer site on the Finchley Road in NW6 and aims to be open for the public in 2011.

Those being shortlisted are: Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Foreign Office Architects, Lifschutz Davidson and Rafael Viñoly Architects.

"We are very excited by the chance to make the JCC vision a reality in London. We are looking for a state-of-the-art building in terms of design, technology and sustainability," said JCC chief executive Nick Viner.

The brainchild of Dame Vivien Duffield, the London JCC takes its inspiration from a trip she made a few years ago to New York. "Ever since I visited the JCC in Manhattan, I have been inspired to help set up something similar in London. With this site and these architects we're getting closer to delivering our vision."

When the multi-million pound project is completed, it will be able to accommodate a wide range of leisure, educational and social programming which aims to reach other to London's diverse Jewish community.

"We want a place where the whole community all ages, branches and levels of observance can come together. That¹s the difference the Jewish Community Centre for London will make," Viner added.
