Comic legend Mel Brooks has helped Leukaemia Research to raise £75,000 by being the guest in a one-off event at the Criterion Theatre in Londonís West End.

Wednesday nightís Special Audience With Mel Brooks featured the 80-year-old comic in conversation with BBC boss Alan Yentob as well as inviting questions from the audience which included Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

During the evening Brooks recounted his life and growing up from how his grandfather was a herring buyer in Brooklyn to how The Producers might have ended up featuring Italian dictator Mussolini instead of Nazi leader Hitler.

Among the questions posed to Brooks was one from Prescott who asked the comic legend about the differences between American and British humour.

For those who couldnít make it to the £150 a head night, a DVD release is planned in 2007.
