Smack bang in the centre of Hendon's Brent Street, Lemonade is one of London's best value for money kosher eateries. From the outside, you're not quite sure what you're getting – is it a dessert place (the name Lemonade would sure suggest it) or a dairy restaurant? Actually, it's neither, as once you get through the door, you're greeted with an eclectic Israeli style menu and surprisingly, there's no lemonade on it
This café-style eating establishment is strictly self-service – order what you like from the extensive menu and when it's cooked, go back up and collect it yourself. But don't let that put you off, as when you're paying £10 for a massive mixed grill of several meats, salads and chips or rice, you can't really go wrong. Other kosher restaurants can charge you 50 per cent or more for the same meal, and not even provide half as much as you get at Lemonade. There's no airs and graces, just good quality cooking.
And if your appetite isn't up to the mixed grill (a choice of meats of the day, including shwarma, kofte and shishlik) there are plenty of smaller dishes to get stuck into, including excellent shwarma in pitta and freshly made falafel. Don't be fooled by the no-frills approach either – you'll get a good meal here without being hit too hard in the wallet.
Only downside we've experienced is that the service can be on the slow side, but when it comes to freshly prepared food, do you really want it to be rushed? This is one of our favourite haunts in kosher London – now if they only did have lemonade on the menu.
