During Chanukah, why not consider giving a charitable donation or helping someone else to benefit from the festive season? There are plenty of organisations who would appreciate your support, and best of all, you can also end up with some really good gifts. Some of these include:

Goodgifts: this organisation, set up by Jewish founder Hilary Blume, allows you to pay for a gift for somebody else, or for someone to benefit from your money. For example, you can pay for an elderly person to have heating during the winter months, or you can contribute towards the clearing of land mines in Cambodia. Meanwhile, you get a keepsake card, giving details of the gift you’ve paid for. Website: http://www.goodgifts.org/goodgifts/default.php

Jewish Care: you can donate to the charity’s Chanukah appeal, which helps people in need in the UK and around the world. For example, £15 will pay for a home carer to visit someone who is housebound, while £50 will fund a talking book for the visually impaired. To find out more, visit their website: http://www.jewishcare.org/

Farmfriends: help farms overseas through this organisation. Your money will pay for a goat, sheep or herd of chickens which will be given to an African farmer in need – for example, a goat will help to supply him and his family with milk as well as providing a source of income. Meanwhile you receive a model of the animal that you’ve paid for. You can either buy the creature yourself or on behalf of a friend or relative (who will then receive the model animal). For information, visit: http://www.farmfriends.org.uk/flash/index.html

Norwood: another Jewish organisation which would benefit from your donations, Norwood aims to help everybody from children with learning difficulties through to families looking to adopt. Find out more information at their website: http://www.norwood.org.uk
